ETAH: A wedding in Nagla Phule village in Etah district was abruptly called off on Sunday night after the bride refused to marry the groom, alleging his family had concealed a serious spinal disorder. The baraat (wedding procession) was forced to return to Katholi village without the bride following a heated standoff between the two families.
The ceremony, held at a guest house in Sakit town, was proceeding normally until the "Darwaza" ritual. According to witnesses, the groom, 25-year-old Karan Singh, lost his balance and fell while attempting to sit on a wooden platform.
Suspicion grew among the bride's relatives when Singh repeatedly struggled to sit upright. While the family had noticed similar difficulties during earlier rituals, they initially dismissed them.
However, the groom’s stumble at the venue led the bride’s family to accuse the mediator of intentionally hiding a chronic spinal condition.
Upon learning of the ailment, the 23-year-old bride stood her ground and refused to proceed with the marriage. Despite hours of community mediation and at- tempts by the groom’s side to persuade her, she remained firm.
The situation nearly turned volatile after members of the groom’s party allegedly took two of the bride’s relatives to a local police station, sparking outrage among the villagers. Order was eventually restored after local residents intervened, leading to a mutual settlement where both the parties agreed to part ways.
The sudden cancellation turned the celebratory atmo- sphere into one of chaos. “While the families argued, the wedding guests finished their meals and slipped away one by one,” said a local villager.
“Large quantities of food and expensive arrangements were left entirely unused,” he added.
Station house officer (SHO) Videsh Rathi confirmed that po- lice reached the spot following a “Dial 112” emergency call. “We were informed of a dispute at the guest house, but neither side has lodged a formal complaint so far. Should a written complaint be re- ceived, we will take the necessary legal action,” Rathi stated.
